Romancing the Tintype
19th Century Wetplate Collodion
Exhibition By: Edith Weiler, Deerfield, NH
Here is a story about a Tintype project to experience and learn as much as possible about the process of making a Tintype. To complete the project, an exhibit seemed to suit the occasion to celebrate the outcome.
After fifteen years photographing, this was the highest point for my fine art photography goals so far. “Art isn’t everything…it’s just about everything”. The heart of the exhibit is showing a personal relationship gained by spending time with each sitter, and sharing the magic of the Tintype.
I am always interested in thinking about the photograph as something other than just an image on paper. I was predisposed to fall in love with this process, loving the hands on nature of it and the implicit history. It is a laborious and dangerous process.
I first learned about the art of tintype making in 2010, when a friend and artist, invited me to Dundee NY for a workshop with John Coffer. The experience was love at first sight.
